Jesus and prayer

Jesus didn’t suggest any format for prayer. It is to be learned in spirit and in truth. That was it. Jesus was giving a spiritual advice. Jesus was not giving detail orders of prayer service. Jesus didn’t teach about silence and meditation. Rather he simply practiced it for himself as it seems.

There are some incidents where Jesus taught prayer. Most importantly he taught the Lord’s Prayer.

“Our Father in heaven, holy is your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

This was a communal prayer. It starts with “Our Father.”

After that, there was a time when his disciples were not able to cure a child. The disciples were able to do that before. Then, after Jesus cured the child by casting out demons, his disciples asked him what went wrong. Then, Jesus encouraged them to pray.

Another time, it was when Jesus was praying in the Gethsemane before his betrayer comes. Jesus said to Peter, “watch and pray.”

Jesus sung his prayer with his disciples, as a Jew. And yet many teachings on prayer were to be handed down by the Spirit whom Jesus promised would come. Jesus simply recognized the ministry of the Spirit.
